பாரதி கண்ட புதுமைப் பெண்

“நிமிர்ந்த நன்னடை  நேர்க்கொண்ட பார்வை

நிலத்தில் யாருக்கும் அஞ்சாத நெறிகளும்

திமிர்ந்த ஞானச் செருக்கும் இருப்பதால்

செம்மை மாதர் திறம்புவதில்லையாம்”

மகாகவி பாரதியார்

The following lines written in my mother tongue, the oldest and purest language of all, Tamil, are an excerpt from Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar’s Kavidhaigal (Poems), a wise Tamil poet and writer of all times. His words of great wisdom have not just enlightened my life but also enhanced my respect and pride for my mother tongue, Tamil. His poems will undoubtedly kindle your passion for this pure language of mine. “En Vazhikatti” (my torchbearer) as I refer to him, has unleashed the feminist in me. To proclaim yourself a feminist and orate long, inspiring speeches on women rights using feministic phrases is a task much easier than grasping the true meaning and essence of feminism. My leader through his wise and strong views on Modern Women has imparted the true spirit of feminism into me. Reading his poems and other works enhances without fail your pride for the womanhood you have been blessed with. I would proudly say that his words of inspiration that new age women through their undeniable knowledge and intellect will help the world prosper and that their achievements and discoveries shall be spoken of in all the spheres of knowledge have shaped the woman I am.

The lines quoted above describe the modern women as Mahakavi Bharathiyar visualised them to be ( Bharathi kanda pudumaippenn). The above lines read as follows:

“With an upright heart, a steady walk with one’s head upheld, a steadfast look, fearless footpaths on the earth and possession of great wisdom the modern woman falters not.”
